Getting There and Back
The easiest way to get from Nice to Cannes is by train. The regional TER trains run frequently, and the journey along the Mediterranean coast is as scenic as it gets. Just head to Nice-Ville station, grab a ticket, and in no time, you'll be stepping off the train in Cannes. If you prefer more flexibility, you can also take a bus or drive, but the train is by far the most stress-free option, especially when you're just looking for a quick escape.
What to Pack
Since Cannes is only a short trip away, packing light is key. We recommend bringing:
- A light jacket or sweater (it can get breezy by the coast).
- Comfortable walking shoes.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (the sun can be strong, even in the afternoon).
- A camera or smartphone for those Instagram-worthy shots.
- A small tote or backpack to carry any souvenirs or treats you pick up along the way.
Things to Do in Cannes
1. Stroll Along La Croisette: This iconic boulevard is where you'll find luxury boutiques, palm trees, and stunning views of the Mediterranean. We loved walking along the promenade, people-watching, and imagining ourselves at the film festival.
2. Explore Le Suquet: The old town of Cannes, Le Suquet, is a charming area filled with narrow, winding streets, historic buildings, and a fantastic view from the top. It's a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views of Cannes and the harbor are worth it.
3. Visit the Marché Forville: If you're a foodie like us, you can't miss the Marché Forville, the local market. It's full of fresh produce, cheeses, meats, and baked goods. We picked up some local snacks to enjoy by the beach.
4. Relax at the Beach: Cannes is famous for its beaches, and even if you only have a few hours, there's nothing like dipping your toes in the sea. Plage du Midi is less crowded and a great spot to unwind.
5. Check Out the Cannes Film Festival Site: Although the festival only happens once a year, you can visit the Palais des Festivals and see the famous red carpet steps. It's a fun spot for a photo op and to imagine the glitz and glamour of festival season.
A Brief History of Cannes
Cannes wasn't always the glamorous hotspot it is today. It began as a small fishing village, but everything changed in the 19th century when aristocrats from Europe discovered its beauty and mild climate. Over the years, Cannes evolved into a luxury resort town, and in 1946, it became the home of the Cannes Film Festival, solidifying its reputation as a playground for the rich and famous.
Food to Try in Cannes
While in Cannes, we couldn't resist indulging in some local delicacies. Here's what we recommend:
- Bouillabaisse: A traditional Provençal fish stew that's rich, flavorful, and perfect for seafood lovers.
- Socca: A type of chickpea flatbread that's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside—perfect as a snack.
- Pissaladière: Think of it as a Provençal pizza topped with caramelized onions, anchovies, and olives.
- Gelato: Because no trip to a coastal town is complete without a scoop (or two) of gelato.
Why Cannes Is Worth the Trip
Cannes is the perfect blend of glamour and relaxation. Whether you're walking along the Croisette, exploring the old town, or simply enjoying a coffee by the beach, there's something for everyone. It's a fun and easy escape from Nice that gives you a taste of the Côte d'Azur's charm without needing to spend the whole day away.
For us, this quick trip was the perfect way to recharge after our French classes, and we highly recommend it as a must-do when you're in the area. So, pack light, hop on the train, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon in Cannes—you won't regret it!
