As we prepare for our two-week French course in Nice, France, we're already daydreaming about how we'll spend our weekends exploring the beautiful French Riviera and beyond. Nice is the perfect base for some incredible weekend adventures, so we've mapped out a few ideas that will make the most of our time in this stunning region.

Getting Around

Getting around Nice and exploring the surrounding areas is quite convenient, thanks to the various transportation options available. 

Here are some easy ways to get around Nice, France:

1. Trains

• SNCF (French National Railways): The train network in Nice is well-connected, making it easy to travel to nearby towns and cities along the French Riviera, like Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, and even into Italy (Ventimiglia). The main train station, Nice-Ville, is centrally located and offers frequent services.
• TER Trains: These regional trains are great for short trips and run frequently along the coast.

2. Buses

• Lignes d'Azur: The local bus network in Nice covers the city and its suburbs comprehensively. Buses are an economical way to get around, with routes reaching popular destinations like Èze, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and even as far as Menton.
• Express Buses: For longer journeys, express buses are available, such as the 100 bus that runs between Nice and Monaco.

3. Trams

• Tramway: Nice's tram network is modern and efficient, with Line 1 running through the city center and Lines 2 and 3 connecting the airport to the city and extending to the suburbs. Trams are great for getting around Nice quickly and affordably.

4. Bikes and Scooters

• Vélo Bleu: Nice has a public bike-sharing system called Vélo Bleu, with stations all around the city. It's a great way to explore Nice at your own pace.
• Electric Scooters: Various companies offer electric scooters for rent, which can be a fun and fast way to get around the city.

• Rental Cars: If you plan to explore more remote areas or the countryside, renting a car might be the best option. There are plenty of car rental agencies at the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport and throughout the city.
• Driving in France: Keep in mind that parking in the city center can be challenging, and traffic can be heavy during peak times.

6. Taxis and Ride-Sharing

• Taxis: Taxis are available throughout Nice, but they can be expensive. Make sure the meter is running or agree on a price beforehand.
• Uber: Uber operates in Nice and can be a more convenient and sometimes cheaper alternative to traditional taxis.

Day Trip to Monaco

Monaco is just a quick 30-minute train ride from Nice, and it's like stepping into a different world. We'll stroll through the glitzy streets of Monte Carlo, visit the famous Casino, and take in the breathtaking views from the Prince's Palace. A walk along the harbor to see the luxury yachts will give us a taste of the high life. We might even time our visit to catch the changing of the guard at the palace or explore the Oceanographic Museum.

Exploring Cannes

Another easy trip from Nice is Cannes, home of the famous film festival. It's about an hour by train, making it an ideal day trip. We'll wander along La Croisette, Cannes' famous waterfront promenade, and imagine the stars who've walked the same path. A visit to Le Suquet, the old town, will give us a taste of Cannes' history, and we'll definitely take some time to relax on one of the public beaches.

Discovering the Perfumes of Grasse

A little inland, we'll find Grasse, the world's perfume capital. It's about an hour's drive from Nice and offers a completely different experience. We'll visit one of the perfume factories, like Fragonard or Galimard, to learn how fragrances are made and even create our own custom scents. The charming old town, with its narrow streets and beautiful views, will be the perfect backdrop for a leisurely day.

Visiting Antibes

Just 30 minutes by train, Antibes is a coastal town with a rich history and a laid-back vibe. We're excited to explore the Picasso Museum, housed in a medieval castle where the artist once lived. The old town, with its market and quaint shops, is perfect for a leisurely stroll. We'll also check out the stunning Cap d'Antibes for some beautiful coastal views.

A Day in Ventimiglia, Italy

One of the coolest things about Nice is its proximity to Italy. We'll hop on a train and in about an hour, we'll be in Ventimiglia. This charming Italian town is known for its Friday market, where we can shop for everything from fresh produce to leather goods. We'll enjoy some authentic Italian cuisine and maybe even pick up some fresh pasta or pastries to bring back to Nice.

What to Pack for Weekend Adventures

We're planning to pack light for our weekend trips, with comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket (it can get breezy by the sea), and of course, our swimwear for those spontaneous beach stops. We'll also bring a small daypack for essentials like water, snacks, and our cameras.

Getting Around

The train network along the French Riviera is excellent, so we'll be relying on it for most of our trips. It's affordable, efficient, and offers stunning coastal views along the way. For places like Grasse or any more remote locations, we might rent a car for the day, giving us the freedom to explore at our own pace.
